Fashion Friday: All That Glitters Is MTV Gold

Fashion Friday: All That Glitters Is MTV Gold

As the holiday party season approaches, so does our desire to rush out and shop some seasonal sizzle. While shiny sequins and eye-catching bling may not be groundbreaking fashion for this celebratory time of the year, they sure are fun, and no one does it up better than our favourite divas at the MTV VMAs.

Walking the red carpet at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City, everyone was dressed to impress in spectacular looks that expressed key design elements which are on-trend for this seasons shopping.

Embellishments were eye-catching and included beading, sequins, and paillettes; metallic fabrics especially silver; and bold patterns that break-away from the traditional.

There were four key themes that we took-away from the MTV VMAs. Which of these will you be adding to your seasonal shopping list?

THE BEADED AND BIJOUX

An exciting emerging trend for 2018 is the fully beaded dress. Shanina Shaik was galactic in this Naeem Khan jumpsuit, and Winnie Harlow honoured the Great Gatsby era in her Zuhair Murad Couture which included beaded fringing. While on the red carpet celebrities prefer to wear their strategically sewn beadwork on sheer mesh, for your NYE celebrations we suggest beading with a backing of velvet or jersey.

Adrianna Papell, Guess, Balmain, and Marciano are labels to look for at Turnabout when your event calls for more impact.

STRUCTURED SOPHISTICATION

Opting to give traditional menswear a sophisticated twist were Blake Likely in Ralph + Russo with a crystal embellished peaked-lapel and uber-pleated pants and Kylie Jenner in a minimalist Tom Ford design that offered maximum impact on the runway.

At Turnabout we are loving the tailored jacket looks from Smythe, Roberto Cavalli, and Ted Baker paired with classic bottoms by Miu Miu, Prada, and Valentino.

PATTERNS TO PLEASE

Thinking of upping your dress game this season? Think patterns – geometric or abstract – and go bold. Singers Chloe x Halle wears dresses by Dutch designer and avant-garde futurist Iris van Herpen. Not content to use fabric that already exists, van Herpencreates hers with a 3D printer! Comedian Tiffany Haddish is an up-and-comer who enjoys making the scene in eye-catching couture and this Naeem Khan black and white beaded dress with matching turban is on-point for her taste.

To turn heads as you walk in, look for Clover Canyon, Self Portrait, Diane von Furstenberg at any of our Turnabout locations.

SILVER SIRENS

High-shine fabrics in silver – from light and shiny to boldly dark – were everywhere on this red carpet runway. Jennifer Lopez’s ruched Versace combined light and dark pewter tones, whereas Karlie Kloss’ Elie Saab tipped towards art deco in gunmetal gray. Both stunning!

At Turnabout, be on the look-out for bling-friendly brands like BCBG Max Azria, Halston, and Aritzia.

By shopping consignment and taking advantage of our point system at Turnabout, seasonal spending on lavish looks - that may only be worn once or twice - need not break your bank account. Afterward (and this is the best part) bring your purchases back to us for resale and let the next savvy shopper sizzle with happiness.
