Fashion Friday: The Met Gala Exposes the Weird & Wonderful

Fashion Friday: The Met Gala Exposes the Weird & Wonderful

With a pink carpet instead of the traditional red, Anna Wintour’s guests for the annual Met Gala fundraiser benefiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art, paraded an eye-catching assortment of outfits honouring this year’s theme – Camp: Notes on Fashion.

At $30,000 per person or $275,000 per table, guests included celebrities, fashion luminaries, the rich, and the eccentric. ‘Camp’ is a state-of-being that according to Wintour “channels irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration.”

Imaginations ran wild, and today we celebrate those who took risks and created wonderful moments on the stairs which led into the most anticipated event of the year.

Cardi B in Thom Browne

Entertainer and rapper Cardi B floated in (with the assistance of a team of well-dressed attendants) in a dramatic deep red gown complete with cap and corset. Thom Browne created this look with the assistance of 35 workers. The train is filled with down, and the whole ensemble is trimmed with 30,000 feathers. We think this was 2,000 hours well spent!

Celine Dion in Oscar de la Renta

The Queen Celine sashayed along the carpet in this glittery champagne coloured bodysuit with streams of beads. The Oscar de la Renta creation weighed 22-pounds and employed the skills of 52 master embroiderers. Dion was caught saying that she thought that the theme was camping and that having a sleep-over at The Met “wasn’t her cup of tea.” Makes one wonder… what would she have worn to cozy up in a sleeping bag?

Ezra Miller in Burberry

Actor Ezra Miller stood out amongst all the over-the-top frou-frou that crowded the carpet. The look took 5 hours to complete, but make-up artist Mimi Choi was up for the challenge. With over 1M Followers on Instagram, this MUA is the queen of surreal optical illusions. Clad in a Burberry suit and holding a mask of his face sans make-up, Miller and Choi’s ‘kaleidoscope eye’ had all doing a double-take.

Jordan Roth in Iris van Herpen

Theatre tycoon Jordan Roth swooped down the pink carpet in a custom-created Iris van Herpen printed cape that reflected the lush interiors of a historic stage. With his arms outstretched the cape showed that the theatre was ‘open’ and with his arms at his sides, the theatre curtains were ‘closed.’ The silk was cut with a laser in measurements of 0.8mm and included many layers to achieve this dramatic effort.

Kris, Kim, Kylie, and Kendall

The Kardashian crew were resplendent in looks by our favourite top designers. Kris Jenner arrived in a surprising blonde bob wig and a look inspired by David Bowie, which was created by Tommy Hilfiger. Kim continued her love affair with all things Thierry Mugler in this wet-look corseted latex creation ‘dripping’ with Swarovski crystals. Kendall and Kylie tapped Donatella Versace for their looks and came away with almost as many feathers as Cardi B and the two most lauded looks of the evening.

Referred to as ‘The Oscars of Fashion,’ this evening of super glamour is just as fun for those attending as for those watching from home. Since 1948, the famous and fabulous has gathered for The Met Gala, and we hope that this incredible tradition of fashion, costume, and creativity never ends!
